Abstract

A posthumously published book by the archaeologist and art historian Ante Milošević (1953–2025), longtime director of the Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments and Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, completed shortly before his death. The monograph presents entirely new findings concerning the largest and oldest of the churches with a centrally planned, multi-apsed layout in Dalmatia—the rotunda at Bribir (ancient Varvaria, Bribirska glavica)—based on the author’s archaeological research conducted over many years. It also discusses other ecclesiastical buildings of the same type in Dalmatia (the so-called hexaconchs), offering entirely new perspectives on all these monuments, as well as on the problems of their genesis, architectural form, and transformation. Chapters: 1. On the Study of the Dalmatian hexaconchs; 2. On the Characteristics of the Dalmatian Hexaconchs in Light of Previous Research; 3. On Bribir and the Bribir Rotunda; 4. The Old Bribir Rotunda in a New Era; 5. Conclusion. The book is published bilingually as part of the Studia Mediterranea Archaeologica series, a long-running publication series of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Split, in which the author published numerous monographs, both independently and in co-authorship. The manuscript was prepared for publication by I. Basić and D. Džino.
