Abstract

The dynamic development of instructional content in e-learning systems is transforming established patterns of learning and teaching, leading to the increasingly widespread adoption of e-learning in education. However capable and willing we may be to embrace a turning point and accept e-learning as an approach that enables improved information sharing and the development of constructive thinking through collaboration and communication, we must first accept changes in how instructional content is presented within e-learning systems. The use of e-learning systems is expected to enhance the teaching and learning process, and one of the fundamental prerequisites for achieving this is the high-quality design of instructional content. This raises the following questions: ‘How should instructional content be designed within an e-learning system?’ ‘Do instructional design models for e-learning systems need to be followed?’ Learning in e-learning systems involves more than simply browsing pages in different formats or adding digital instructional materials. It requires the design of instructional content centred on online learning. In online learning supported by an e-learning system, learners and teachers are physically separated, yet learning can occur at any time and from any location. To provide instructional content online, it is necessary to use an effective platform that supports the teaching and learning process. In this textbook, Moodle was selected as the platform to support learning and teaching. With all these considerations in mind, the central focus of the textbook is on instructional design models. Through their description and presentation, these models demonstrate their importance and applicability to the selected subject area knowledge developed within an e-learning system.
