Abstract
In this paper, the Croatian ABC book is contemplated as the underlying school textbook for the introduction to reading for a fi rstgradeelementary school pupil. The accent is set on the didactic(al)-methodical concept of the ABC book, and the methodical solutions for beginner’s reading and writting classes (methodical approach for aquireing basic reading and writting skills, the order of learning how to read and write letters, the methods of processing letters and various types of printed letter, and the technique of handwritten letters) (re)presented in the ABC books are explained.
