Drawing on works of art, printed sources, archival materials, and documents produced by Rosary confraternities, it argues that representations of Our Lady of the Rosary created after the Battle of Lepanto should not be viewed as a single, homogeneous group of images celebrating the victory of the Holy League. Instead, a distinction must be made between compositions that directly commemorate the battle and those that continue to develop an established iconographic model within the broader context of promoting devotion to the Rosary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Particular attention is paid to the relationship between devotion and political memory, and to the different ways in which the memory of Lepanto was constructed and transmitted in specific local settings. Within this framework, the study highlights the role of St Justina as a distinctive feature of the Venetian response to the battle and its commemoration. By examining examples from Venice, the Venetian mainland (Terraferma), and the eastern Adriatic coast, the book sheds new light on the complex interactions between religion, politics, and visual culture from the late fifteenth century to the early decades of the seventeenth century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
This book presents a new interpretation of one of the most widespread themes in early modern religious art.
