The monograph is primarily based on a motif-thematic analysis of relevant oral literary material and on the author’s fieldwork, which draws extensively on ethnological and ethnographic research. The women of the Dalmatian Hinterland have never been the subject of a comprehensive scholarly study. Both academic and public discourse have long been dominated by the image of women as being subordinate to men, while research has focused predominantly on marginal aspects of women’s lives that appeared to substantiate such assumptions. The lives of women in the Dalmatian Hinterland have been profoundly shaped by the traditions of a patriarchal social order. This is reflected in the representation of women in oral literature, an integral component of traditional culture. It is therefore unsurprising that, on the one hand, the image of women in oral literature mirrors the social and cultural environment to which they belong, accepting it as an unquestioned reality. On the other hand, both oral literature and ethnological and ethnographic research consistently point to women’s \u201edisplacement\u201c from the sphere of security and the clearly defined order of the traditional community. This contrasting position of women creates both the possibility and the need to examine the issue from a different perspective. The aim of the monograph is to illuminate this apparent contradiction and to open up possibilities for revising, or at least reinterpreting, previous research on various aspects of the lives of women in the Dalmatian Hinterland. To this end, it takes as its point of departure a range of oral literary forms recorded in the region, together with ethnological and ethnographic insights into traditional culture more broadly, within which oral literature is an inherent component. The theoretical framework, while grounded primarily in philology (oral literature, the relationship between literature and reality, and literature and space), also encompasses folklore studies and ethnology (cultural memory and theories of identity), as well as feminist criticism.
