Although only a smaller portion of Salona’s urban fabric has been archaeologically explored, monumental buildings have been uncovered, such as the amphitheatre, theatre, temples, thermal and residential structures. These structures were decorated with architectural sculptures, wall paintings and floor mosaics, and frequently also with various types of sculpture. Given the modest percentage of explored area, every piece of evidence about finds is precious, which leads to varying degrees of detail in the descriptions of individual monuments. Due to the abundance of material and the long time span of the city’s development, this study focuses on surveying, locating and systematising the ancient monuments of the city and the approach taken toward them up until the establishment of systematic research by the Archaeological Museum in Split. In addition to sources dealing with movable material, this study also examines sources providing data on individual sites. Through parallel research and documentation of the monumental material, together with insight into the historical changes of the locations where these monuments arose, a diachronic perspective and a kind of historical reconstruction of the space is offered. Particular emphasis is placed on monuments recorded in various sources that are no longer accessible today. Depictions of sites through different sources are also presented in order to reconstruct the process of change in these spaces over the centuries. This study also traces the formation of the image of the once-famous city, as well as the common motifs found in the descriptions of travel writers, in both textual and visual form. The travelogue as a literary form, suited to a combined use of scholarly and poetic expression, and of textual and visual material, offers a wealth of data for the study of monuments and space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
